Chapter 1: A new level of disappointment!
So I made it! Here I am Heathrow, London. Its 5am and I want out of this huge airport, it feels like I have been walking forever. My bags are heavy and I am unbelievably tired! I have not slept in 24 hours, I have been sitting in an airplane for an entire day and night and all I want right now is a bed, my bed, but hey, i’m abroad now.
Oh great! just my luck, track work on the underground tube line that I need to get off at, because I soooo know the tube like the back of my hand. This will be the first out of many points of getting lost.
I do manage to get to the hostel eventually, the doors are locked and nobody is answering reception. So here I am, standing outside with 20 kilo bags on my back and my eyes popping out of my head from tiredness. When somebody does manage to respond at reception and let me in, more good news! Whats this? I can’t check in until 2pm!!! You have got to be kidding me! (by this point i am ready to jump of the London Bridge)
So off I set, sure to not ruin a day, exploring London with what feels like a ten tonne backpack on my back (Mr Mac needs a diet) I’m cold, tired and alone! Is this really what I wanted, is this is everything I have been waiting for… Why? why did I come here? why did I leave what im happy and comfortable with? And then I look to my left and see Big Ben and the London Eye all in one and I am reminded. Things I can only otherwise see in postcards and TV are right in front of my eye and I am up for the best experience ever. Suddenly I dont feel so tired anymore.
London is home of the double decker bus tours and as you do, I took one and sat on the top with the open roof, now the tour was nice and informative and the free river cruise was great but when I was on the top of that tour bus I believe my hands at one stage turned to ice. (mixed with the jet lag this is not a good thing.)
At 2pm when i could finally return to my hostel and sleep I think I was walking back dead or maybe just sleep walking and I’m pretty sure I walked from the top end to the bottom of london because silly me was too lazy to figure out how the buses work (which ps: are easy as pie). Now of course when I checked in I couldnt seem to fall asleep – ironic how that happens. A good shower did me well though.
My first couple of days in this trip of a life time I must admit were not the best. It seemed I spent 70% of my time getting lost. At home I need a gps to not get lost in my own street, now Im in another country that I have never been to, Im soon learning to read a street map.
So here I am in London, complaining like a Brit. Rest assure I know things will get better!
